So much for productivity

When I start a book, if it’s really good and gets to me, I simply cannot put it down. The weekend I went through The Hunger Games there were no meals prepared or clothes washed. The girls were fine with that because they really wanted me to read the books. Sean and Michael were patient and knew it would only last the weekend. I started the books Friday evening and finished them Sunday afternoon. And by Monday, I was back to work with the regular routine of family life.

Michael and Amy read through a series of books a few years ago that they just loved and ever since, they’ve been trying to get me to read them. But as we learned from The Hunger Games weekend, I am unable to simply read a bit, then go on with the rest of my life. This series has seven books, which is why I’ve put off reading it. I simply don’t have the time to devote to seven books – I mean, I would if I had any self-discipline about reading fiction, but we already know I don’t.

So I have no explanation as to what possessed me to pick up the first book in the series. But I picked it up, and just like the kids said, it was good. Good. So I reached for the second. And this morning, when I was supposed to be getting ready for the day, I finished the third. And now, only out of my deep appreciation and love for you, dear blog readers, I have willed myself to not start book #4 until I write this post.

Oh, Harry, Ron and Hermione, you have totally gotten to me!

Somehow, I have been shielded from knowing anything about the Harry Potter books – I haven’t watched the movies and didn’t pay any attention to the stories when they were all the rage. Which is making reading them so much stinkin’ fun!

Michael and Amy love that I’m finally able to share their love for the story.

Rebecca is also reading the series this summer. She’s on book 5, and not being able to talk through the story is killing her! There is a strict, “No Harry Potter Talk” in our home right now. I don’t want anything to ruin the story for me.

Of course, I know in the end that Voldemort can’t win. I mean, of course. That’s how stories go. But I have absolutely no idea how Harry and his friends defeat him. And finding that out, I’m afraid, will
take precedence over food prep and grocery shopping and laundry and cleaning. I know the kids won’t mind too much… I just hope Sean can put up with my new (and temporary) obsession.

I did give him a new book for Father’s Day, so hopefully he can read that while I’m reading about Hogwarts:

And a note: the Dursley’s are terrible people. Just had to get that off my chest.
