Not a good day to work for GM

Posted: 10:04 AM Jan 26, 2009

"General Motors will have workers at the Delta Township plant alternate shifts starting in February. The first shift will report for regular production February 2. Second shift workers will report February 9, taking over the first shift's hours. Crews will alternate until March 30, at which point GM may drop a shift all together, depending on sales.

Employees will be on layoff for the weeks their shift is not working.

The changes at Delta are part of a nationwide production cut at GM. A formal announcement is expected this morning."

Maybe it’s time to dust off the résumé?

So sorry to hear that. Jay got a promotion last week -- with a raise to be forthcoming when the salary freeze is off -- then yesterday, his company laid off 3 production workers (out of about 50 people total), cut everyone's salaries and increased employee contributions to the health insurance. These are strange times, indeed. At least we still have a job, and the powers that be were smart enough to cut executive salaries by a greater percentage than other salaries.
