On to Stage One again

I showed my stylist the pictures of the haircut I thought I wanted. She jumped on board immediately, nearly falling over herself to reach the scissors, which made me think she’d been dying to really cut my hair for a long time. I got a Glamour magazine from the waiting room, flipped to a picture of hair I’d kill to have and flatly said, “Can my hair ever do this?”

I still had a flicker of hope. A small flicker, but a flicker nonetheless.

“Well, Christy, if you let it grow a lot more, used hot rollers every morning, maybe. But your hair just doesn’t have the texture to hold a curl.”

Oh, that hurt. It is truth I’ve known forever, but just because I’ve known it doesn’t mean I embraced this truth. All I could think was where the heck was this stylist 20 years ago?! If I’d been told this in high school I could have been moving through all my Stage Ones much more rapidly!

As I was sitting in the chair I got a call from my sister: "Don't cut it! Just give it a bit more time!"

Oh, my poor, poor sister. Still in Stage Two. Surly there has to be a support group for us somewhere...

This is the picture from Glamour:
And this is my new cut:

I love your new cut and besides...who really wants a high maintenance with hot rollers every day anyway!

  2. I just have to say...I so enjoy reading your posts. While I haven't blogged myself in a long while ... I do check yours each day. You make me smile. I think I've been right where you are with the haircut.

  3. Your cut looks really good, and that's partly because it has enough thickness to give it shape. Mine would be very wispy in the same cut. Seems like that thickness would serve you well in a long style too, but top thickness makes either look good.

I've spent my life craving flat hair! Starting at age 15, i straightened it with the stuff that had lye in it. Until they invented this bio-thermal straightening procedure (i go twice a year - just got it renewed Monday and it's flat as a pancake and i LOVE it!), i used the drugstore stuff with the African-American models on the box.

  4. Hey Pleistocene,

Thanks for rubbing your full, curly hair in my flat-haired face...

It may look full but believe me, it's not. There may be a lot of it but it's fine, fine, fine.

  6. Traci,

Glad you like it. I think it will be more manageable...

Good to see you last night! It was an interesting discussion to say the least!

  7. Christy,

While I really do like your new haircut, that first comment was not from me. :) Who knew there would be two Traci's that are spelled the same that read and comment on your blog! Where did you go for your cut? I forgot to ask you last night. And yes, quite interesting and always fun and enjoyable discussions!

Now, I have to say that my hair would do the Glamour thing -- with correct styling. Which I can't do. My theory is that Southern women either have a special gene or are given secret training that allows them to do all sorts of wonders with hair (including teasing, which I've only ever needed about 4 times in my life, but honest to goodness, MY comb just won't do it!). So there.

You look great! Did I notice some highlights in there too? I'm way jealous. . .to be able to get your hair cut during the week and have it look good too. Enjoy your blessings! :-)

  9. Hilarious because I wish I wrote it! I have had terrible hair my entire life. I go through phases of saying, "if i have to live with bad hair it might as well be long!" I try to grow it out, but at about shoulder length all of the ends just start to split and break off. This summer I actually bought a wig at a kiosk in the mall and have worn it a few times! The color matched perfectly. It made a giant jumbo Genie ponytail on the back of my head. I took it home and cut it into four pieces. I can pin the 1/4 piece of it under my real ponytail and have a hint of bounce and body! I have bad hair even under a hat because all pulled together my hair is as thick as a rat's tail. I can wear two pieces of the wig under a hat to face a decent ponytail! Ha Ha! I think I will wear it tonight!

    Good Luck!

  11. Traci in Florida -

Hey, I remember seeing you and my sister lip-sync and dance to Greased Lightning 30 years ago - you are *way* more than just a Traci in Florida!

    Miss you,
    Christy

PS: The "30 years ago" hurt, didn't it?!
