As a member of BlogHer’s publishing network I am occasionally
asked to write posts for their Life Well Lived section. I wrote about balancing the stresses of the holiday season back in November, and in March I wrote about
the fashion trends I was looking forward to this spring. Both were relatively
easy and fun to write. I got to include an Amy Grant song in the November post,
and put a picture of some awfully pretty shoes on the March one. But this time, the
question is not as simple:
What are
your favorite ways to dress well for your size and shape? How do you make your
wardrobe work through transitions?
Oh my word, I have no idea. Truly no idea how to answer this. I’m
a terrible shopper and hate even thinking about going to the mall. Somewhere
along the line I missed out on the shopping gene. Sean is a much better, and
more patient, shopper than I am. He will actually go to multiple stores when we’re
looking for something. If it’s not at Target I’m pretty sure I don’t need it.
But as I was bemoaning the fact that I had no answer to the
question, I remembered a recent interview I read with Tim Gunn of Project
Runway fame. Y’all, I love Tim Gunn. Love. So when he speaks, I listen. And my
dear Tim said, “Our mantra is "Try it
on" and make no assumptions how it's going to look on you.”
That’s probably the best advice I could give or get. How it looks
on the hanger is not necessarily how it’s going to look on you. Just give it a
shot – you never know unless you try it on.
Now, of course, Sean and my personal shopper Amy, will make me try
things on. Ugh.

ReplyDeleteWe are so alike :) Ivan is another one who will go in multiple stores -- actually for him, he HAS to go in every store, in order to ascertain that he's getting the best price/deal/product :)
I HATE clothes shopping. Because I HATE trying things on. Because I HATE how I look in most things. And for me it is more about the comfort anyway. Not that I don't want to look nice. I do. I just don't want to go to have to go to too much trouble. And face it, looking good is HARD work. (And getting harder, the older I get.)
But I finally have started thinking and learning about how to sew my own clothes so I can have things that fit properly. But only part of this stems from not finding things that fit... It's also about not finding anything decent to buy!
